The Structure of Water

The molecular formula of water is H2O.
• The water molecule contains 2 hydrogen atoms and 1 oxygen atom. The hydrogen and oxygen atoms are held together by covalent bonds (bonds formed by the sharing of two electrons)
• The three atoms in the water molecule are arranged in the form of a letter “V”, with oxygen atom at the tip and two hydrogen atoms at the ends of the two limbs.
• Like other molecules, water (H2O) is neutral

Water is a Polar Covalent Molecule:

A molecule in which the charges are unevenly distributed is called “polar,” because the molecule is a bit like a magnet with two poles.

The attraction between the hydrogen atom on one water molecule and the oxygen atom on another water molecule is known as a hydrogen bond.
